Islam has a one pointed central theme that sounds loud and clear to most people whom practice or study and that would be Monotheism which would be the belief in only one God, specifically for Islam that is Allah, and he is considered to be omnipotent. Allah to many believers has four solid basic functions and that would include creation, sustenance, guidance, and of course last but not least judgment. People were created so that they could serve as well as worship and obey Allah and Allah alone. Obeying Allah includes making the world a healthier happier place and that is part of what the Koran explains and instructs people to do and in short that is to not be selfish. The five pillars are maybe comparable to the ten commandments in that they are a condensed version of what to keep in mind as a person goes about their day to day actions. Number one is the creed (shahada), number two is daily prayers, number three is fasting during a holiday known as Ramadan, number four is almsgiving, and number five is the travel to Mecca at least once in their life time. In many ways depending on a persons lot in life all of these could be challenging. Praying is free but time consuming, fasting can be hard on a person if their body’s don’t have extra fat storage to use as energy, giving money can be very hard for most families whom have many different bills, and traveling to Mecca seems like it could be costly and at times dangerous. It seems that Islamic people have both understandable beliefs when it comes to treating people and the earth well then on the other hand why is it so imperative for these people to visit and fast still? Doing research has just landed me with more questions concerning the culture. These seem like good values and in some ways very similar to Christianity as well as some other core beliefs of other religions.
