Court Workers

What is your job title? I am a Court Designated Worker (CDW) for the state of Kentucky.

What is the starting salary for your career field? $29,000

How long have you been at your current job? 4 years

What made you decide on CDW?  I decided on this job because it was with kids and because i had the opportunity to work with kids.  It was something that fit with my degree and that could bridge me into another job in the future.

Was there any other job that you wanted to do other than a CDW? I originally and still would like to do Rape Counseling, or profiling for the FBI.  I am preparing to obtain my LCSW in the fall through WKU.

What made you choose a career in the criminal justice field?  I have always loved the amazement and the curiosity that criminal justice brings.  I love the psychology that it brings.  The human mind is amazing.

Is there chance for growth? With this job I do have the chance for growth if I choose to apply for a supervisory position.  Otherwise, there is not.  However, I can apply for other jobs within the state; now that I am a state employee.

What degree is required for your position?  For this position you are required to have a job in a Social Services field i.e. Social Work or Criminal Justice.

Is a certain degree required for promotion? A degree in criminal justice or a degree in social work is required.

What’s the scariest thing that has happened to you while on duty?  I had a juvenile look up my phone number and call my house in the middle of the night.  On another occasion I had a parent cuss me out and threaten my life because I was not parenting their child.

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you while on duty? I have had several officers hit on me when I was on call outs.  I have also had juveniles come back into my office after they turn 18 and ask me out on a date, as well as their parents.

Do you have to start at a lower level, such as patrol, or can you go straight into being a court designated worker? In...
