Stop Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity in Georgia
Georgia is currently rated second in the nation for having the largest number of obese and overweight children. During the past thirty years in America, childhood obesity has tripled. Georgia is currently the only state that has laws to control food and beverage health in childcare facilities (Childhood Obesity, 2011). Georgia has created many programs that will work with each community and statewide networks to focus on this disease. Each family’s lifestyle and dietary habits are also contributing to this problem in childhood obesity, which these programs are trying to address. Georgia is breaking new ground against childhood obesity by implementing new programs, laws and lifestyles to try to eliminate this disease. Recently, the state of Georgia has implemented laws and programs to help eradicate the problem of childhood obesity; these same laws and programs should also be implemented nationwide to help stop this growing problem.
Childhood obesity is a major problem in Georgia, as a result of unhealthy food choices and lack of parental supervision. Children have the convenience of fast food and vending machines with junk food available to them at school as well as unhealthy school lunches. There are one million children out of 2.7 in Georgia that has been diagnosed with obesity and 75% of parents do not even know that their children suffer from obesity (Devika, 2011, para 3). Georgia has many programs to help families make better food choices such as Choices for Kids, Strong4Life, and Center for Disease Control in order to stop this trend.
