Checkpoint assignment
Making billing mistakes can cost the practice big money; it can really make the patients angry and even jeopardize the relationship with the insurance company.
The three most common billing errors are:
1. Simple date entry errors: A missed or incorrect keystroke can cost a practice thousands of dollars. These types of errors are indeed very difficult to catch. You have to make sure that the staff is properly trained and know how to work the software and equipment. The best way to avoid any type of billing errors is to use a front end claims to identify any kind of mistake input by the employee before submitting it into the system. Doing an audit will help as well.
2. Duplicate billing: A duplicate billing error is a service that might have been coded or keyed two separate ways, which means you are billing the insurance twice for the same billing. They system or human error are two of the most common reasons this error happens. Scrubbing the software will help with this type of error, doing an audit will also help with this same issue?
3. Incorrect coding: The doctor’s staff should be properly trained with excellent coding with the changes that happen in medicine, medical billing becomes a really difficult service as codes are added or removed. To solve this problem you should have scrubbing software with continuous education for the employees.
The effect can be disastrous, because the clinic can be penalized for fraud and have their licenses revoked, and the patient is paying extra money for a service they did not want.
