When you think of biotechnology, you should think of organisms. Actually you could think of microorganisms and how they apply to genes. Biotechnology covers a variety of different area in biology; some include new things and old things. You have to remember that things are always changing and that we’re always learning new information. It includes anything whether it is hard, long, short, simple, easy, familiar, etc. It’s hard to make a use for the term because it’s so open to even find a good definition for it. Cloning can even factor in to biotechnology. Cloning falls under replication. We learned about replication here in week 6. Replication is almost like having the same of something, it is called duplication. Farming is probably has a large amount to do with biotechnology. Anything new in biology and farming is pretty much considered biotechnology. For example, if we found a faster way to grow green beans, that would be biotechnology. It can be research that has been done to make things grow better for example. Sometimes when you put old ideas together with new ideas you can end up with something combined that is a lot better and more effective. You can make changes and do things for the better. Genetic engineering is a good thing to think about too. Some folks bread miniature horses for example that is considered to be biotechnology. Dominant genes will help make each horse in the breeding process unique. These days we can have all different ways of breeding animals. Years back we only had one way of breeding animals. Fermentation is another big deal with biotechnology. Think about foods and drinks. Wine needs fermentation, beer does and so does cheese. Microorganisms make up the cheese and drinks. What do you think you do your laundry with? How about enzymes? Think of all the ingredients in laundry detergents. Hormones play a big role in how your body reacts to different things and your sexual desires....
