A World of Possibilities

The Future of Video Games

Video games have had a robust but short history. Since their induction into the entertainment scene, they proved to be a dominating force, taking hold of the audience and overpowering all other forms of media. Even with its short history, video games have made massive strides with vast improvements in hardware and software. But, what is in store for the video game industry? Farfetched dreams of the past have now become realities of the present; will the future hold true to the same trend?

To understand what the future may hold for video games, we must understand and explore its history. Even with the development of video games short background in the entertainment field, video games have had an ever-changing effect in the way we act, behave, and even communicate. But bBack in the late forties, when the concept of a video game was far tucked away in the minds of the general public, was when the first idea arose. Ralph Baer, a young engineer, was tasked to building an improved television set, but he wanted to do something more. The idea of a video game was dismissed by the managers, but this set in motion the idea of concept of early video games (Herman, Kent, Horowitz, Miller(GameSpot); 2009).

The first video game was not one accessible by just anyone. Built upon the first initial phase of computers, (computers those that took up huge amounts of space (room’s even whole buildings), these games were built by hobbyist and college students across the United States (History of video games, 2009). Teams of students and teachers alike all across the country began to work on developing these the first “video” games, usually limited to light pens and ancient displays. Work was long, hard, and tedious while developing on punch card computers and binary code. But, in 1961, an MIT college student made the biggest breakthrough.
